Are You Playing Too Many Fairway Woods?

How many fairway woods should you actually carry?

For many golfers, the answer is based more on tradition than performance.

Driver.

Then 3-wood.

Then perhaps 5-wood.

That is simply how the top of the bag has always been built.

But what if the 3-wood barely goes farther than the 5-wood?

What if it launches too low?

What if the carry distance is almost identical?

And what if one of those clubs is taking up a valuable space in the bag without doing a genuinely different job?

That is exactly what we wanted to find out with Mike.

In the previous parts of this fitting series at EP Golf Studios, we had already worked through Mike’s mid-to-long iron gapping and identified where his irons stopped producing useful performance.

His 4-iron and 5-iron were not creating the flight, carry or gapping required, so we replaced them with a 7-wood and 9-wood.

We then tested whether his strong-lofted 7-iron was genuinely helping, or whether a more traditionally lofted iron could produce a better overall golf shot.

That left one major question.

What should Mike carry above the 7-wood?

So we tested a:

  • 3-wood

  • 4-wood

  • 5-wood

and looked at:

  • Carry distance

  • Total distance

  • Launch

  • Ball speed

  • Peak height

  • Overall gapping

The goal was not to find the lowest-lofted fairway wood Mike could hit.

It was to find the longest fairway wood that actually earned a place in his bag.

How Many Fairway Woods Should You Carry?

There is no correct number for every golfer.

Some players may carry one.

Others may carry two.

Some may carry three.

The important question is whether every club produces a clearly different result.

A useful fairway wood setup should create meaningful differences in:

  • Carry distance

  • Trajectory

  • Total distance

  • Shot shape

  • Use from the tee

  • Use from the fairway

  • Ability to hold greens

If two fairway woods repeatedly do almost the same job, one of them may be unnecessary.

That space could potentially be used elsewhere in the bag.

Do You Really Need a 3-Wood?

Not necessarily.

A 3-wood is one of the most traditional clubs in golf.

For many players, it automatically sits directly below the driver.

But tradition is not a fitting measurement.

A 3-wood typically has relatively low loft compared with higher-numbered fairway woods.

That can produce useful distance for golfers who generate enough:

  • Clubhead speed

  • Ball speed

  • Launch

  • Strike quality

But if a golfer has a mid-to-slower swing speed, lower loft can become more difficult to use effectively.

The 3-wood may:

  • Launch too low

  • Fly too flat

  • Become difficult to strike from the turf

  • Produce only a small carry gain

  • Require very good contact

  • Give similar performance to a higher-lofted wood

If that happens, carrying a 3-wood simply because it is “supposed” to be in the bag makes little sense.

Why a 5-Wood Can Sometimes Go Almost as Far as a 3-Wood

This surprises many golfers.

A 3-wood has less loft, so surely it should always go farther than a 5-wood?

Not always.

Lower loft can help create more distance, but only if the golfer can launch the ball effectively.

A higher-lofted 5-wood may produce:

  • Higher launch

  • Better peak height

  • More carry

  • Cleaner contact

  • Better consistency

For golfers with less speed, that extra launch can offset much of the theoretical distance advantage of the 3-wood.

The result can be a surprisingly small gap.

Sometimes the higher-lofted club may even produce the more useful overall shot.

3-Wood vs 4-Wood vs 5-Wood

This comparison is much more useful than simply asking which club goes longest.

Each club needs to earn its place.

3-Wood

A 3-wood generally offers the lowest loft of the three.

Potential advantages include:

  • Maximum distance potential

  • Useful tee option

  • Lower, stronger flight

  • Greater total distance for faster players

Potential issues for slower swing speeds include:

  • Harder launch

  • Lower peak height

  • Inconsistent strike

  • Reduced carry advantage

  • Greater difficulty from the turf

4-Wood

A 4-wood can offer a useful middle ground.

It may provide:

  • More launch than a 3-wood

  • Easier strike

  • Strong carry distance

  • More versatility

  • A useful balance of distance and height

For some golfers, a 4-wood can make both a 3-wood and 5-wood unnecessary.

5-Wood

A 5-wood provides additional loft and can often be easier to launch.

Potential benefits include:

  • Higher flight

  • Better peak height

  • Easier carry

  • More stopping power

  • More confidence from the fairway

The key is whether it still creates enough distance separation from the 7-wood below it.

The Problem With Carrying Clubs That Overlap

Every golfer is limited to 14 clubs.

That makes every position in the bag valuable.

If a 3-wood carries only marginally farther than a 5-wood, you may effectively be carrying two clubs for one distance.

The same issue can happen throughout the bag.

You might see:

  • 4-iron and 5-iron overlapping

  • Hybrid and 7-wood overlapping

  • 3-wood and 5-wood overlapping

  • Wedges covering almost identical yardages

A well-built bag should minimise unnecessary duplication.

The goal is not to carry every available club category.

It is to create useful options.

Carry Distance Matters More Than Headline Total Distance

When fitting the top of the bag, golfers often become distracted by total distance.

A 3-wood may roll farther than a 5-wood because it launches lower.

But the key question is whether the additional total distance is genuinely useful.

Carry distance is particularly important when a fairway wood is used for:

  • Long approaches

  • Carrying bunkers

  • Carrying water

  • Reaching par fives

  • Playing over hazards

If the 3-wood only produces extra distance after landing, it may not actually solve the golfer’s distance gap.

The context matters.

Why Launch Is So Important for Slower Swing Speeds

As swing speed decreases, launch becomes increasingly important.

A lower-lofted fairway wood requires the golfer to create enough speed and suitable delivery to get the ball airborne.

If that does not happen, the flight can become:

  • Low

  • Flat

  • Difficult to carry

  • Hard to stop

  • Inconsistent

A little more loft can often create a much more usable trajectory.

That is why fairway wood fitting should not simply chase the lowest loft a golfer can physically hit.

The goal is the strongest useful flight.

Peak Height Can Reveal Whether a Fairway Wood Is Working

Peak height tells us how high the ball reaches during flight.

This is particularly useful when comparing fairway woods.

If the 3-wood launches significantly lower than the 4-wood or 5-wood, the golfer may not be creating enough height to maximise carry.

A higher peak height can help:

  • Keep the ball airborne longer

  • Increase useful carry

  • Improve approach-shot playability

  • Create a more versatile trajectory

Again, the best result is not always the lowest-lofted club.

Ball Speed Is Only Part of the Story

A lower-lofted fairway wood may generate strong ball speed.

That can look impressive on the launch monitor.

But ball speed alone does not determine whether the club belongs in the bag.

The fitter also needs to consider:

  • Launch

  • Carry

  • Peak height

  • Strike consistency

  • Gapping

  • Total distance

A club can produce good speed but still fail to create a useful distance difference.

That is why the complete flight matters.

What Should Sit Above a 7-Wood?

Mike had already moved into a setup including a 7-wood and 9-wood.

That changed how we needed to evaluate the next club.

The question was not:

“What is the best 3-wood?”

It was:

“What club gives Mike a genuinely useful gap above his 7-wood?”

That distinction matters.

Once the lower part of the top end is established, the next club needs to fit around it.

A 5-wood might be sufficient.

A 4-wood might create the best separation.

A 3-wood may create a useful top-end gap.

Or it may not.

The launch monitor tells us which one actually works.

Why 4-Woods Deserve More Attention

The 4-wood is often overlooked.

Many golfers automatically choose between 3-wood and 5-wood.

But a 4-wood can be a very effective compromise.

The additional loft compared with a 3-wood can help improve launch and strike, while still providing more distance than a higher-lofted fairway wood.

For a mid-to-slower swing speed golfer, that can make it an extremely useful option.

The fitting question becomes:

Can the 4-wood provide nearly all the distance of the 3-wood while producing a better flight?

If yes, the 3-wood may not be needed.

Why Fairway Wood Fitting Is Different From Driver Fitting

The driver is primarily used from a tee.

Fairway woods often need to perform from multiple lies.

That means the fitter should consider more than maximum distance.

A fairway wood may be used:

  • From the tee

  • From the fairway

  • From light rough

  • Into par fives

  • On long par threes

  • As a positional club

That versatility matters.

A club that produces excellent numbers from a perfect tee but is difficult from the fairway may not be the best option for the golfer.

The Longest Fairway Wood Should Be the Longest Useful One

This principle mirrors what we found with Mike’s irons.

Your longest iron should not simply be the lowest-lofted iron you can hit.

Likewise, your longest fairway wood should not simply be the lowest-lofted wood you can strike occasionally.

It should be the club that still produces:

  • Useful carry

  • Reliable launch

  • Enough height

  • Consistent strike

  • Clear gapping

  • A distinct on-course purpose

If the performance starts to collapse below a certain loft, there is little value in going lower.

When Does Another Fairway Wood Become a Wasted Club?

A fairway wood may be redundant when:

  • Carry distance overlaps with another club

  • The flight is too low to be useful

  • Strike quality becomes inconsistent

  • It is rarely used

  • It does not perform from the intended lie

  • It only adds rollout, not meaningful carry

  • Another club performs the same role more reliably

That does not necessarily mean the club itself is poor.

It simply means it may not suit that golfer’s bag.

Should Slower Swing Speed Golfers Carry a 3-Wood?

Some should.

Some should not.

Swing speed alone does not provide the complete answer.

A slower-speed golfer may still launch and strike a 3-wood effectively.

Another golfer with similar speed may gain virtually nothing from it.

The fitter needs to look at:

  • Ball speed

  • Launch

  • Carry

  • Peak height

  • Strike

  • Gapping

If the 3-wood creates meaningful additional performance, it can stay.

If it does not, there is no reason to force it into the bag.

Why More Loft Can Sometimes Create Better Distance

This is the same principle we saw in Mike’s iron fitting.

A club with less loft has more theoretical distance potential.

But the golfer still needs enough launch.

If adding loft improves trajectory, the ball may:

  • Stay airborne longer

  • Carry more efficiently

  • Produce better average distance

  • Become easier to strike

That is why a 4-wood or 5-wood can sometimes rival a 3-wood for carry.

For slower-speed golfers, loft can be a performance tool rather than a distance penalty.

Fairway Wood Gapping Should Be Measured

Guessing your gaps based on club numbers is unreliable.

A golfer may assume:

3-wood = longest

5-wood = medium

7-wood = shortest

But real performance does not always follow that pattern neatly.

Launch-monitor testing can establish:

  • Actual carry

  • Actual total

  • Ball speed

  • Peak height

  • Launch

  • Overlap between clubs

That information makes it much easier to decide which clubs deserve a place.

How Big Should the Gap Between Fairway Woods Be?

There is no universal yardage gap that every golfer must achieve.

The important thing is that the difference is large enough to create a distinct shot option.

A tiny gap between two clubs may not justify carrying both.

A bigger gap may be perfectly acceptable if it suits the rest of the set.

Gapping should be viewed across the entire bag rather than one pair of clubs in isolation.

That is why top-of-bag fitting needs to consider the irons, hybrids and fairway woods together.

Why the Whole Top of the Bag Should Be Fit as One System

Mike’s fitting is a good example of why the top of the bag should not be built one club at a time.

We first established where his irons stopped working.

Then we found alternatives for those distances.

Then we challenged the strong-lofted iron setup.

Only after that did it make sense to test what should sit above the 7-wood.

Each decision influences the next one.

The final setup has to work as a complete system.

7-Wood and 9-Wood Setups Are Not Just for Seniors

High-lofted fairway woods are becoming increasingly common because they can offer useful combinations of:

  • Launch

  • Height

  • Carry

  • Forgiveness

They can be particularly helpful for moderate and slower swing speeds, but they are not limited to older golfers.

A player of any age may benefit if the ball flight and gapping work.

The club number is not what matters.

The result is.

Stop Building Your Bag Around Tradition

A traditional bag might include:

  • Driver

  • 3-wood

  • 5-wood

  • Long irons

That does not mean your bag should.

Your ideal top end might instead include:

  • Driver

  • 4-wood

  • 7-wood

  • 9-wood

Or:

  • Driver

  • 5-wood

  • Hybrid

  • Long iron

Or something completely different.

There is no prize for carrying the most traditional setup.

The objective is to cover the golf course effectively.

Signs You May Be Carrying Too Many Fairway Woods

You may want to test your setup if:

  • Your 3-wood and 5-wood carry similar distances

  • You rarely use one of them

  • Your lowest-lofted fairway wood flies very low

  • You struggle to strike your 3-wood from the turf

  • Your 5-wood performs almost as well

  • Your top-of-bag gaps are inconsistent

  • You are missing another useful club elsewhere in the bag

If several of these apply, your fairway wood setup may need simplifying.

How to Choose Between a 3-Wood, 4-Wood and 5-Wood

Do not choose by name alone.

Test each option and ask:

Does It Create More Carry?

Not just total distance.

Actual useful carry.

Does It Launch Properly?

The flight needs to work for your speed.

Is the Peak Height Useful?

Can the ball stay airborne efficiently?

Is It Easy Enough to Strike?

Especially from the fairway.

Does It Gap Properly?

Does it create a different shot from the club below?

Would You Actually Use It?

A club with impressive data but no on-course purpose may still be unnecessary.

The Best Fairway Wood Is the One That Does a Different Job

This is the most important takeaway.

Do not carry a 3-wood because every golfer is supposed to own one.

Do not carry a 5-wood because it feels safer.

Do not add a 4-wood simply to fill the numerical gap.

Every club should have a clear purpose.

The best fairway wood is the one that adds a genuinely different shot to your bag.

What Mike’s Fitting Teaches Us

Mike’s fitting highlights a broader principle.

Club selection should be driven by performance rather than labels.

His irons stopped working at a certain point.

That led us towards 7-wood and 9-wood options.

Then we needed to determine where the fairway woods should stop.

The process was driven by:

  • Carry

  • Launch

  • Ball speed

  • Peak height

  • Total distance

  • Gapping

Not tradition.

Not club numbers.

Not what someone else carries.

That is how a properly organised golf bag should be built.
