Senior golfers are given a lot of equipment advice.
Use more loft.
Use a softer shaft.
Choose a lighter setup.
Do not use anything too stiff.
For some golfers, that advice can work perfectly well.
But it is not a rule.
In our latest driver fitting at EP Golf Studios, John came into the studio with two drivers and a fairly clear idea of which one should suit him best.
His assumptions were completely understandable.
He has a more moderate swing speed, so the logical expectation was that more loft and a softer shaft would help him launch the ball better and maximise distance.
But once we tested those assumptions on the launch monitor, the results told a very different story.
One simple equipment change produced a 27-yard difference between John’s best drives.
And that was not the only surprise.
We also tested different shaft options after John immediately told us that one regular-flex shaft felt far too soft and whippy.
Moving into a shorter, stiffer-feeling setup changed how comfortable and controlled the driver felt almost instantly.

Do Senior Golfers Always Need More Driver Loft?
No.
More loft can help some golfers create better launch conditions.
But more loft does not automatically mean more carry or total distance.
Driver performance depends on the interaction between:

Spin
Dynamic loft

Strike location
Clubface delivery
If a golfer already delivers plenty of loft, adding even more static loft can potentially create a flight that is too high or too spinny.
That can reduce distance.
This is why simply recommending a high-lofted driver to every slower-swing-speed golfer can be misleading.

A softer shaft may suit some slower-swing-speed golfers very well.
But shaft flex labels do not tell the complete story.
In John’s fitting, one of the regular-flex options immediately felt too soft and whippy to him.
