Utility iron custom fitting in Newbury, Berkshire
Find a utility iron that has a clear job in your bag.
Compare utility and driving iron setups for the tee shots and longer approaches you want to play. We help you assess whether the flight, carry and strike consistency suit your swing, rather than choosing a club because it looks like a tour player’s.
Compare suitable options using Foresight Sports GCQuad, with your current utility iron or the long iron, hybrid or fairway wood whose role you want to replace as the starting point.
£90 · 90 minutes · Written specification included · Equipment priced separately
Suitable stock shaft options are considered against your swing, feel preferences and budget before any additional-cost upgrade. No obligation to buy.
Right-handed fittings only.

A fitting with a clear purpose
Your appointment focuses on a reliable tee option or a useful club between your longest iron and fairway wood. It can help if your long iron launches too low, your hybrid turns over more than you want, or you need a controlled tee option.
A utility iron may be useful from the tee but less effective for approaches if it does not produce enough height and carry. It does not have to replace the same-numbered iron, and a lower flight is not automatically an improvement.
We look at your normal shot pattern and feedback alongside the numbers. Beginners and experienced golfers are welcome. If your current equipment is still the right choice, we’ll tell you.

What happens in your utility iron fitting?
Understand your game
We discuss your intended shots, usual miss, preferences and budget. Your fitter agrees the priorities for the session before selecting suitable options.
Establish a baseline
Bring your current utility iron or the long iron, hybrid or fairway wood whose role you want to replace. If practical, bring the clubs immediately above and below the proposed utility iron. This gives the comparison context.
Test suitable options
Compare relevant heads, shafts and specifications. Your feedback on feel, appearance and confidence matters alongside the launch data.
Review the complete result
We review carry, launch, peak height, landing angle and dispersion against the shots you actually need. A single longest shot should not decide the recommendation.
Leave with a clear recommendation
We explain the comparisons and provide a written fitted specification. You can order, consider your options or keep your existing equipment.
Head, shaft, grip and specification
Heads and lofts
Head construction, loft, sole design and face presentation influence launch, ball speed, forgiveness and confidence. A compact appearance or low-spin flight is not automatically the best fit. We compare suitable options without assuming every golfer can use a low-lofted utility iron effectively.
Shafts and playing length
Compare suitable weights, flexes, profiles and playing lengths, considering the complete club and your intended shots. Graphite and steel options depend on compatibility and available demos; neither material is automatically right for everyone.
Grip and final specification
Grip size, condition, comfort and feel belong in the complete setup. Your written recommendation records the relevant head, loft, shaft, flex, playing length, grip and settings, plus the recommended lie where assessed. Physical alterations and replacement grips are separate work, with compatibility and costs explained.
What the numbers tell you
Speed and strike
Ball speed, delivery and strike pattern help explain how consistently the setup performs. Compare representative shots rather than one exceptional strike.
Launch, spin and height
We assess the flight against your intended shots. Lower spin, lower flight or greater speed is not automatically a better outcome.
Carry and landing angle
Carry is distance through the air. Landing angle helps discuss how the ball approaches the ground. Neither alone guarantees that a shot will stop on a particular surface.
Dispersion and distance gaps
The spread of shots and the separation between clubs matter alongside distance. Loft numbers alone do not establish useful carry gaps.
Flight figures are calculated from launch data, and total distance depends on ground assumptions. A fitting cannot guarantee extra yardage or the removal of every swing issue.

Utility Iron fitting FAQs
How much does the fitting cost?
£90 for 90 minutes, covering one utility or driving iron. Includes suitable testing, GCQuad analysis and a written fitted specification. Equipment purchases are separate.
Is a utility iron the same as a driving iron?
The terms overlap in everyday use. We focus on the head design, loft, shaft and shots you need rather than the label.
Should I choose a utility iron or a hybrid?
Compare carry, flight, strike and your intended use. Contact us before booking if you want a broader comparison across club types; this appointment covers one utility iron.
Do I need a fast swing for a utility iron?
There is no single swing-speed cut-off. Your strike, launch, carry and confidence determine whether a particular setup is useful. A hybrid or fairway wood may suit you better.
What loft should my driving iron be?
Choose loft around the carry gap and flight you need, rather than the number on the sole. Lower loft does not guarantee more usable distance.
Can I use a utility iron for approaches?
Potentially, if it produces enough carry, height and an appropriate landing angle for your intended shots. Test those priorities rather than judging it only from a tee.
Will a driving iron fix my miss off the tee?
A suitable setup may give you a useful option, but equipment does not guarantee a straight shot or remove swing issues.
Do I need a premium aftermarket shaft?
Not necessarily. We compare suitable stock options against your swing and budget. Additional-cost options should justify their place through performance and feel in the complete setup.
What should I bring?
Bring your current utility iron or the long iron, hybrid or fairway wood whose role you want to replace, your usual glove and comfortable golf clothing and footwear. If practical, bring the clubs immediately above and below the proposed utility iron.
Do I have to buy equipment afterwards?
No. You receive a written specification and can consider the recommendation in your own time.
Do you offer left-handed fittings?
This service is for right-handed golfers only.
