Why Distance Irons Are BAD for Slower Swing Speeds

Distance irons sound ideal.

They are marketed around speed, forgiveness and extra yards.

For golfers with slower swing speeds, that can seem particularly appealing.

If you do not generate huge clubhead speed, surely a stronger-lofted iron that promises more distance must make the game easier?

Not necessarily.

In our latest fitting at EP Golf Studios, we continued working with Mike, a golfer with a mid-to-slower swing speed who was using a very strongly lofted iron set.

His 7-iron measured just 28.5°.

We then compared it against significantly weaker-lofted alternatives, including the TaylorMade P770 and Titleist T250 Launch Spec.

The obvious expectation would be that the stronger-lofted club should travel considerably farther.

But despite adding significantly more loft with the alternative irons, Mike lost very little distance — and at times virtually none.

What changed instead was the quality of the golf shot.

The weaker-lofted alternatives produced:

  • Higher launch

  • Better peak height

  • Better landing angle

  • More stopping power

  • A much more playable ball flight

That raises a much more important question than simply asking which iron goes farthest.

If a weaker-lofted 7-iron travels almost the same distance but produces a significantly better golf shot, which club is actually more forgiving?

What Is a Distance Iron?

A distance iron is generally designed to help golfers create more ball speed and distance.

These clubs often combine characteristics such as:

  • Stronger lofts

  • Larger clubheads

  • Fast face construction

  • Lower centre-of-gravity designs

  • Perimeter weighting

  • Hollow or multi-material construction

The category has become extremely popular.

On paper, it makes sense.

Golfers enjoy hitting an iron farther, and manufacturers can build clubs that create impressive distance from familiar club numbers.

A modern 7-iron can therefore have considerably less loft than a more traditionally lofted 7-iron.

That does not automatically make it bad.

The problem begins when the golfer cannot create the launch conditions required to make that stronger loft useful.

Why Stronger Loft Makes an Iron Go Further

Loft has a major influence on launch.

Reducing the loft of an iron can generally create a lower launch and, provided the golfer produces enough speed and suitable strike, potentially more distance.

This is why strong-lofted irons can produce impressive numbers during testing.

But there is a limit.

A golfer must still create enough:

  • Ball speed

  • Launch

  • Peak height

  • Carry

  • Landing angle

for the shot to perform effectively.

When swing speed is lower, simply reducing loft can eventually create a flatter shot rather than a meaningfully longer one.

That is exactly where the idea of a “distance iron” becomes more complicated.

Mike’s 28.5° 7-Iron

Mike’s existing 7-iron measured 28.5°.

That is a very strong loft for a club labelled as a 7-iron.

The assumption might be:

28.5° should travel much farther than a club with 33°, 34° or 35° of loft.

And if distance alone were the only consideration, that assumption might sound reasonable.

But golf shots have to do more than travel forwards.

Approach shots need to:

  • Reach the required carry distance

  • Fly high enough

  • Land at a usable angle

  • Stop on the green

  • Remain playable when strike varies

That is why simply measuring total distance can be misleading.

Why a Weaker-Lofted Iron Can Travel Almost as Far

One of the most interesting findings in Mike’s fitting was that adding considerably more loft did not create the huge distance loss many golfers would expect.

In some cases, there was very little difference.

At times, virtually none.

Why can this happen?

Because carry distance is not controlled by loft alone.

It is the result of multiple variables working together, including:

  • Ball speed

  • Launch angle

  • Spin

  • Peak height

  • Strike quality

  • Dynamic delivery

A stronger-lofted club may launch lower.

A weaker-lofted club can create a higher and more efficient flight.

If that improved trajectory keeps the ball airborne more effectively, the golfer may preserve far more carry than expected.

So although the loft number changes significantly, the final carry number may not.

Distance Is Not the Same as a Good Golf Shot

This is one of the most important equipment lessons golfers can learn.

The longest shot is not automatically the best shot.

Imagine two 7-irons.

The first flies low, travels a long way and lands shallow.

The second travels almost the same carry distance but flies higher and lands more steeply.

Which one would you rather hit into a green?

For approach play, the second option may be considerably more useful.

That is why fitting needs to look beyond headline yardage.

Why Peak Height Matters for Slower Swing Speeds

Peak height is the maximum height the ball reaches during flight.

This matters particularly for golfers with moderate or slower speed.

As clubhead speed reduces, golfers can find it increasingly difficult to launch lower-lofted clubs high enough.

A strongly lofted iron may therefore create a very flat trajectory.

A higher-launching alternative may produce a more useful peak height.

That can help the ball:

  • Stay airborne

  • Carry effectively

  • Approach the green more steeply

  • Stop more quickly after landing

Peak height is therefore not just a cosmetic number.

It directly affects how playable an iron can be.

Landing Angle Changes How Useful the Club Is

Landing angle describes how steeply the ball is descending when it reaches the ground.

This is crucial for approach shots.

A ball arriving on a shallow trajectory is more likely to release forwards.

A shot arriving at a steeper angle has a greater opportunity to stop.

That means two irons producing a similar carry distance can behave completely differently when the ball reaches the green.

For Mike, the weaker-lofted alternatives created a more useful landing characteristic.

That is a major advantage if the purpose of the club is hitting approach shots rather than simply recording the biggest total-distance number.

Stopping Power Is Part of Iron Performance

Golfers sometimes treat stopping power as something only elite players need.

It matters at every level.

If you are hitting an iron towards a green, you generally want the ball to remain reasonably close to where it lands.

A low flight that runs forwards significantly can create problems.

You may carry the front of the green only to finish through the back.

Or you may be unable to attack a tucked pin because you cannot generate the required height and descent.

A more playable iron should produce a flight that suits the shots you need to hit.

Are Stronger-Lofted Irons More Forgiving?

This is where the term “forgiveness” deserves closer examination.

A large clubhead with substantial perimeter weighting may be marketed as forgiving.

And it may genuinely offer excellent performance retention when strike moves away from the centre.

But forgiveness should not be judged only by how much ball speed a club preserves.

A golf club is only truly forgiving if the resulting shot remains useful.

Consider a club that maintains ball speed beautifully but produces:

  • Very low launch

  • Poor peak height

  • Shallow landing angle

  • Limited stopping power

Is that more forgiving than another club that launches higher, lands better and produces nearly the same carry?

For some golfers, the answer may be no.

Forgiveness Should Be Measured by the Outcome

Practical forgiveness includes several factors.

A forgiving iron should ideally help maintain:

  • Ball speed

  • Carry distance

  • Launch

  • Peak height

  • Direction

  • Landing angle

  • Consistency

If one club gives you a slightly longer number but a significantly poorer ball flight, it may not actually make the game easier.

The whole shot needs to be considered.

This is particularly important for slower swing speed golfers because launch and height can become limiting factors.

Why Slower Swing Speeds Can Struggle With Strong Lofts

A golfer with plenty of speed may be able to launch a strong-lofted iron perfectly well.

That player may generate enough ball speed and height to make the design extremely effective.

A slower-speed player faces a different challenge.

As loft reduces, they may reach a point where they cannot create enough vertical launch.

The result can be:

  • Flat trajectories

  • Reduced peak height

  • Similar carry distances between clubs

  • Shallow landing angles

  • Excessive rollout

  • Poorer long-iron performance

This is why equipment should not be judged purely by category.

A “game-improvement” or “distance” iron is not automatically the easiest option for every golfer.

Stronger Loft Does Not Always Mean More Carry

This is perhaps the biggest misconception exposed by Mike’s testing.

Golfers often assume a 28.5° 7-iron must carry significantly farther than a 33–35° alternative.

But that depends on whether the golfer can create a useful launch window.

In Mike’s case, increasing loft resulted in very little distance loss.

Sometimes virtually none.

At the same time, the flight improved substantially.

That suggests the stronger loft was not providing the advantage that the specification sheet might imply.

The club looked longer on paper.

The weaker-lofted alternatives produced the better golf shot.

Why Club Numbers Can Be Misleading

Golfers frequently compare clubs by the number stamped on the sole.

A 7-iron is compared with another 7-iron.

But if one 7-iron measures 28.5° and another sits several degrees weaker, they are not performing the same loft-based role.

This is why club numbers should not be used as the only reference.

The golfer needs to understand:

  • Loft

  • Carry

  • Launch

  • Peak height

  • Landing angle

  • Distance gaps

A 7-iron is simply a label.

The ball flight determines what the club actually does.

TaylorMade P770 vs a Strong-Lofted Distance Iron

The TaylorMade P770 was one of the weaker-lofted alternatives tested with Mike.

The point of the comparison was not to declare that one model is universally superior.

It was to investigate whether additional loft and a different iron design could create a more functional golf shot for Mike’s particular swing.

That is an important distinction.

The best-performing club in Mike’s fitting will not automatically be the best-performing club for another golfer.

A faster player may see a different outcome.

A golfer with a different strike pattern may respond differently again.

The purpose of custom fitting is to test the individual.

Titleist T250 Launch Spec and the Importance of Launch

The Titleist T250 Launch Spec was another significantly weaker-lofted alternative tested.

Again, the fitting question was not simply:

“Which iron goes longest?”

It was:

“What happens to the complete flight when we give Mike more loft?”

The improvements in launch, peak height and landing characteristics help demonstrate why a fitting needs to evaluate how the golf ball behaves throughout its entire flight.

Distance without trajectory context can hide a lot of useful information.

Are Distance Irons Actually Better for High Handicappers?

Not automatically.

Handicap does not tell us which iron design a golfer needs.

A high-handicap player may have:

  • Plenty of speed

  • Limited speed

  • A high ball flight

  • A low ball flight

  • Centre strikes

  • Toe strikes

  • A shallow delivery

  • A steep delivery

Those golfers may require completely different equipment.

Similarly, a low-handicap golfer can also benefit from a more forgiving design.

Club selection should be based on performance characteristics rather than handicap stereotypes.

Distance Irons Are Not “Bad” Irons

The title of this video is deliberately challenging.

It is important to make the distinction clear.

Distance irons are not inherently bad.

For the right golfer, they can be excellent.

A stronger-lofted iron may help a player achieve the trajectory and distance they need.

The problem is assuming they are automatically better for slower swing speed golfers because they are labelled as longer or more forgiving.

For some players, additional loft can actually produce a better combination of distance and playability.

The fitting decides.

Not the marketing category.

Why the Previous Long-Iron Fitting Matters

This test followed directly from our previous fitting with Mike.

In that session, we worked through the top end of his iron set to find the point where his long irons stopped being useful.

We examined:

  • Carry distance

  • Gapping

  • Launch

  • Peak height

  • Landing angle

  • Forgiveness

That process showed why simply adding lower-lofted irons was not necessarily helping.

The next logical question was whether the issue extended further into the set.

If a strong-lofted 7-iron is producing a poor flight, could adding loft actually improve performance without sacrificing meaningful distance?

That is what this follow-up test explored.

Why Iron Gapping and Iron Loft Are Connected

Iron gapping is not just about creating fixed yardage intervals.

The gaps need to come from usable ball flights.

If one club carries farther only because it launches significantly lower and runs more after landing, the golfer may not have gained a useful approach option.

This becomes increasingly important as loft decreases.

For slower-speed players, an effective set may need:

  • More loft

  • Higher-launching iron designs

  • Hybrids

  • Fairway woods

  • Mixed iron configurations

The entire bag should be built around the shots the golfer can actually produce.

The Best Iron Set Might Not Be the Longest Iron Set

Golf equipment marketing naturally focuses on distance.

Distance is easy to understand.

It is easy to compare.

And hitting a 7-iron farther than you used to feels impressive.

But an iron set is not designed to win a 7-iron distance competition.

It needs to help you play golf.

That means each club should provide:

  • A predictable carry

  • A useful trajectory

  • Appropriate stopping power

  • Confidence

  • Separation from neighbouring clubs

If a weaker-lofted iron does that while losing virtually no distance, it may be the considerably better choice.

What Should Slower Swing Speed Golfers Look for in Irons?

Slower-speed golfers should pay particular attention to flight rather than simply distance.

Useful fitting metrics include:

Carry Distance

Does the club actually carry far enough, and does it create a useful gap?

Launch

Does the ball get into the air easily enough?

Peak Height

Does the flight reach sufficient height to remain useful?

Landing Angle

Can the ball approach the green steeply enough to stop?

Strike Consistency

Can the golfer produce the required result repeatedly?

Forgiveness

What happens when contact is not perfect?

Confidence

Does the golfer feel comfortable looking down at and swinging the club?

The correct iron is the one that produces the best overall combination.

Should You Know the Loft of Your 7-Iron?

Yes.

You do not need to become obsessed with specification sheets, but understanding your iron lofts can explain a lot about your ball flight and gapping.

If your 7-iron is particularly strong, ask yourself:

  • How high does it launch?

  • What is the peak height?

  • How does it land?

  • Does it stop effectively?

  • How does it gap into the 6-iron?

  • Would slightly more loft actually improve the shot?

The number stamped on the sole does not tell the complete story.

Knowing the actual loft gives you more useful context.

Signs Your Distance Irons May Not Suit You

Consider testing alternatives if:

  • Your irons launch noticeably low

  • Your 5-, 6- and 7-irons begin to bunch together

  • Approach shots struggle to stop

  • Your longest irons rely heavily on rollout

  • Stronger lofts are not creating additional carry

  • You struggle to achieve useful peak height

  • You feel you need perfect contact to create a good flight

None of these automatically means you need new irons.

They simply indicate that testing may reveal a better setup.

What Is the Most Forgiving Iron for a Slower Swing Speed?

There is no single answer.

A larger clubhead is not automatically more forgiving for every slower-speed player.

The fitter needs to consider how the complete club produces:

  • Speed

  • Launch

  • Height

  • Carry

  • Landing

  • Dispersion

For some golfers, a traditionally lofted or higher-launching iron can be more playable than a strong-lofted distance model.

For others, a distance iron may work extremely well.

The golfer’s actual data decides.

Stop Judging Irons by Distance Alone

There is nothing wrong with wanting more distance.

But iron distance has to be useful.

If Club A travels marginally farther but flies too low to hold a green, while Club B creates almost identical carry with much better height and stopping power, the longer club may not be the better club.

This is especially important for golfers with slower swing speeds.

The goal should be:

Maximum usable performance — not maximum 7-iron yardage.
