Is Your Driver Spinning Too Much? How to Fix Spin Issues With a Full Driver Fitting

Most golfers immediately blame the shaft when their driver spins too much, but the reality is often more complex.

In this session at EP Golf Studios, we worked with Riley Banks, a South West England Boys player, who was struggling with a driver that felt too spinny, especially into the wind. Early numbers didn’t immediately suggest a major spin problem, so we had to dig deeper to uncover what was really happening.

This fitting demonstrates a full, in-depth driver evaluation, focusing on how head choice, loft, shaft profile, strike location, and repeatability all interact. Instead of jumping to conclusions, we tested, re-tested, and verified the results to ensure the final decision was genuinely the right one.

Head and Loft Comparison: Titleist GT2 vs GT3

We compared the Titleist GT2 and GT3 driver heads, adjusting loft and swing weight while testing multiple premium shafts. This approach helped us understand not just what worked, but why it worked.

Note: This session focused specifically on optimizing performance within the Titleist GT range, supported by Titleist. In a typical EP Golf Studios fitting, we would test multiple brands and head designs. This scenario, however, reflects what many golfers experience when they want to optimise a single brand or model.

Shafts Tested

We evaluated multiple shafts to find the perfect match for Riley’s swing:

  • Tensei 1K Black 65 X

  • Ventus Black TR 6 X

  • Graphite Design Tour AD VF 6 TX

  • ACCRA Tour Z RPG Gold

  • ACCRA TZ5 (tested but removed)

  • Mitsubishi 1K Pro White (tested but removed)

  • HZRDUS Black 6.5 (comparison vs Riley’s current 6.0)

A key takeaway: small changes in strike location — sometimes just a few millimetres — can dramatically affect spin, often more than the shaft itself. Many golfers overlook this critical factor when diagnosing driver issues on the course.

Why This Fitting Matters

This video is ideal for:

  • Golfers struggling with driver spin

  • Anyone considering a driver fitting

  • Players unsure whether their shaft or head is the problem

  • Golfers interested in Titleist GT driver fittings

  • Those who want to understand why fittings work, not just what was chosen
